The Logo Design Process

The logo design process took several weeks and captured over 120 design iterations from idea sketches to final products. Under the direction of Mr. Steve Person, two classrooms of Graphic Design I students put into practice what they have been learning and began the design process for developing a logo for Liberty LEADS (Leading, Engaging, Achieving, and Discovering with Students) for the Liberty Public School District.  Students reviewed a Liberty LEADS profile, including our slogan, what we do, and the top three things we wanted to communicate through our logo. We wanted the logo to span a K12 audience and narrowed the type of logo we were wanting to be created to help give students a starting point.

Students began putting their sketched ideas on a shared Google Slides where Trey Katzer, Director of Technology, and I were able to review and leave comments via the speaker’s notes. Slides created an opportunity to capture open dialogues with the students and allowed students to learn from others’ progress and feedback. This project became as much of a learning process for us as it hopefully was for students. Even after teaching in the classroom for years, we had a LOT to learn about giving design feedback. Mr. Person continually gave us pointers on how to give targeted feedback in order to help students understand the direction we wanted to see their logo develop. This process took some patience on everyone’s part as we got better at the feedback process and the ending designs exceeded our expectations.

When you spend hours and hours giving feedback and watching students grow, it is almost impossible to narrow the field to a list of finalists. At the end of the project we selected a Top 12 to send to our Executive Leadership Team led by Dr. Jeremy Tucker, Superintendent. This team narrowed to their top three designs and provided additional feedback for a few changes they wanted to see.

We felt strongly that all staff should have a say in the logo we brand for LEADS so we sent it out to staff and received over 460 votes within a few days to determine our final winner which was Olivia Scheible, Liberty North Freshman. We will go to Olivia’s classroom to present her with a gift certificate to recognize her hard work and follow up by publishing the results via district news sources.

What did we learn from this process?

  • Students have talents that make you stop and say W-O-W!
  • When you provide an authentic audience, it increases motivation to produce quality work.
  • When using an authentic audience, do NOT assume adults automatically ‘know’ what kind of feedback to provide. Be specific and train those giving feedback so that it yields meaningful results.
  • Projects should be mutually beneficial to all parties involved, meaning agree upon expectations before you begin.
  • You get out of the project what you put in. Like a business, you don’t want the designers waiting for days for feedback. Be prepared to provide feedback in a timely manner… This may require late night deadlines.

This design project was one of the most meaningful learning experiences I have ever helped facilitate. I say this as a LEARNER first. Yes, we received a fantastic product, but what we gained through the feedback process and the growth and sophistication of the designs completely blew me away. I walk away from this project better understanding the logo design process and am so proud of each and every student and the work they submitted!

Where do we go from here?

You will start seeing the new logo on our LEADS website: http://leads.liberty.k12.mo.us, print publications, social media accounts, and even more exciting… on teacher laptops as our eLEADS will be sharing the winning design as badges when Liberty Educators participate in LEADS professional learning during the 2015-2016 school year.

Congratulations Olivia! Pictured with her instructor, Mr. Steve Person:
