Assessing Learning with Canvas Rubrics

Now that we are not face-to-face, it is important students know how they will be evaluated. Rubrics provide a great opportunity to outline your expectations in student friendly language. Consider creating Single Point Rubrics to simplify the expectation and help ensure your students are able to hit the target.

As we are all online, it is a great time to try adding your rubric to your assignments in Canvas for grading. TIP: when adding rubrics to assignments, be sure to select “Use rubric for grading”.  This allows you to score the rubric, select save and the score will be automatically placed in your Canvas gradebook.

Here are some additional Canvas Rubric help documents to get you started:

Want to be able to write, save, and reuse comments when grading? Try adding your rubric as free-form instead of ratings.

BONUS TIP: If you are trying to attach a rubric to an External Tool (aka Google Doc), you MUST edit the document and change it to an online submission / attach the rubric / change the document to an External Tool. If you already have student submissions, you will NOT lose any of the work. I have tested this process AND verified with Canvas help.
